#04 “Welcome to Ash Wednesday at Home”
Pastor Heidi Chamberlain
Philippians 2:1-2a – If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care— then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends… [The Message]
Before we begin…
Ash Wednesday emphasizes a dual encounter:
- We confront our own mortality and confess our sin before God within the community of faith.
- The form and content of the service focus on the dual themes of sin and death in the light of God’s redeeming love in Jesus Christ.
- The use of ashes as a sign of mortality and repentance has a long history in Jewish and Christian worship, and the Imposition of Ashes can be a powerful nonverbal and experiential way of participating in the call to repentance and reconciliation – even at a distance.
Ash Wednesday is the day when we gather to begin our 40-day retreat called Lent. Every year we gather at church on this day to remind ourselves that we are not eternal. Yet, this year our local congregation is unable to meet in person due to COVID-19 precautions. Because of this, many of us will find ourselves in our homes unsure how we might mark the beginning of Lent. Or will we?
Today, experience this simple liturgy. It works well with one person or many. Know we are together on this day, even at a distance… as a community of believers of Jesus Christ, we are never alone, even at a distance, because we are Living Faith, Seeking Justice, and Pursuing Peace! Praise be! Peace be with you,
